Round 6

A very cool short animation in a video game cinematic style, from Snowball Studios.

"Our goal was to make a high quality video game cinematic styled trailer. In order to do this, we invented a video game called Fragball on which we based the action. The film shows an excerpt from the personal story of Snap, a Fragball gamer, as he plays out his last round – round 6."

There is also a lot of making of information and videos on the Round 6 development blog.

Making Future Magic – iPad light graffiti animation

The creative minds at Berg have come up with the most creative use of the iPad that I have seen so far – an awesome 3D light graffiti animation! Made in response to Dentsu London‘s question “What might a magical version of the future of media look like?” the video features 2D cross-sectional stills of 3D imagery, displayed on an iPad screen and physically moved by an animator while being photographed with a long exposure. The result is 3D text and images made of light which appear to hang in the air.
This is the first of two collaborations between Berg and Dentsu. I look forward to the second!

Complete History Of The Soviet Union, Arranged To The Melody Of Tetris

I have always been a big Tetris fan, so discovering this music video for A Complete History of the Soviet Union As Told By A Humble Worker, Arranged To The Melody Of Tetris was an absolute delight. The song is by Pig With The Face Of A Boy, and the video is directed by Chris Lincé.

HDR Video

San Francisco-based video production company Soviet Montage has developed a system for recording HDR video, using a beam splitter and two Canon 5D MkII SLRs to capture the same image with different exposures. This is an exciting new technique which could potentially see the end of cumbersome lighting rigs and much greater freedom in locations shooting. Soviet Montage is currently working on an undisclosed short film project using this technique. More information to come as it is released.
